Child Development: The Do’s And Don’ts Of Child Rearing

Most child development theories arrive at a consensus that the majority of emotional, behavioral and social development of a child takes place during the early year of life. In order to ensure a healthy and happy child as a parent, you must be very careful and attentive at all the child development stages. Here are some dos and don’ts for effective child development.

Do appreciate your child for even the smallest of achievements: -

Children are like budding flowers. If you treat them with love, care and warmth they will grow to their best. Encourage and motivate them when they do even little things such as making their bed, setting up the table or creating some artwork. Use positive phrases such as, “Wow! You did it all by yourself?” Such phrases encourage the child to take initiative without worrying about judgments. Do let your child be independent: -

Most child development theories inculcate that parents must not always be present to lend the helping hand to their child. If your child is having difficulty in climbing the ladder, let him try it by himself. Be vigilant, but let your child be independent. The positive effects of smartphones on child development can be retrieved as they allow children to explore and utilize their intuitive skills.

Do make your child learn gratitude: -

One of the most important personality traits is humility and gratitude. Parents must teach their children to be thankful to God for all the blessings they have in life. Children must know that their parents work very hard to give them all the provisions to which they must be grateful. Form a very young age, they must learn to empathize with those who are not privileged enough. As a parent, you must involve your child in charitable endeavors and social work. Hence you will lay the foundation of a socially and morally responsible generation of the future.

Don’t compare your child with others: -

The worst a parent can do to his child is compare him with his peers. There may be occasions when your child might not meet up your expectations or behave in an appropriate manner. Look for ways to correct the behavior rather than criticizing or comparing him to others. This kind of negative attitude can significantly damage his confidence and self worth. Every child is different. You just realize that and set your expectations realistically from your child. Click here to know more about negative effects of smartphone on children.

Don’t lose patience: -

Children do throw tantrums. Sometimes they can take a toll on your mind. Be assured that every parent goes through such a stage in child rearing when it can be really difficult to handle the child. Hence, when faced with such a situation, firstly try to keep yourself calm. Remember, you are dealing with a child whose thinking and analytical skills are not fully developed yet. However, you are an adult who must tackle the situation with the best analytical ability. Get down to your knees and have eye contact with your child. First of all, hug him and assure him that everything is ok. Think of ways to divert his attention elsewhere. If you also lose your patience and temper you will end up worsening the situation as the child would feel completely insecure. This will traumatize the child even more. Therefore, try to maintain your composure and stay firm when dealing with such a situation.

Don’t conceal the bitter side of life from your child: -

Fairy tales are good to enhance children’s creativity. Morale-based stories do help children think positively and develop great personalities. However, the real world is not all that sweet and glittery. In reality, there is no one who leads a problem free life.  As parents, you tend to hide the vices of the world thinking it will create a bad impact on a child’s ideology. However, what you should ideally do as a parent is to teach your child how to deal with the adversities of life. Teach your child how important it is to stand strong and firm in front of problems. Share your tough experiences with them so that they know how they are to embrace problems in life and come out of them gracefully.
